Beaver Nation

Beaver Nation Friday night I went down the river to the annual MIT- Harvard men’s basketball game. Harvard is an NCAA Division I program and we are DIII, so it’s rare that we directly compete with them. As a result, it’s quite the event: Shot of the MIT crowd, courtesy of Maude Gull ‘19 Women’s basketball team turning up strong! If “athletics” isn’t the first word that comes to mind when think of MIT I don’t blame you. In some ways, it’s exactly what you would expect: MIT has produced more Academic All- Americans than any other DIII university. We call ourselves the Engineers. Our fight song references U- substitution. Really, everything I’m trying to say is pretty well-summarized around the first minute of this video: To be honest, from the outside looking in, it may appear strange that MIT even entertains that idea of having an athletics program. It seems like students should be more focused on activities like winning Nobel prizes and doing math or whatever. Doing math or whatever And I won’t regale you with tales of the workload or the sleepless nights, but let’s just say that time is a valuable resource here. That’s why it’s a bit surprising to hear that 20 percent of the undergraduate population at MIT plays a varsity sport. We have one of the largest collegiate athletics programs in the world. Just this weekend alone, five teams are competing in their respective NCAA tournaments- congrats to men’s and women’s cross-country, and women’s soccer, field hockey, and volleyball!!! So what’s it like, being a student-athlete in a place where the “student” part is so heavily emphasized? There’s a lot of ways to answer that, but I think the most important thing I can say is, in my 3 years on campus, I have never had to sacrifice academics for athletics, and very rarely the opposite, either. A big factor is that MIT has this amazing policy where no classes, recitations, etc. are allowed to be scheduled from 5-7 PM. That way all teams can hold practice at the same time everyday, without worrying about academic and sports schedules conflicting. Every now and then you can still get hit with the dreaded “Class Sandwich”, with academic commitments ending at 5 and starting at 7. Still, I can’t complain. I know how lucky we are to have this window at all. This is the only exception that MIT makes for athletics. Despite what may happen at other schools, MIT does not admit students just because they have a sweet jump shot, and they also don’t give athletic scholarships. So what motivates the athletes here? That is something you can’t measure in wins or awards or NCAA appearances. Clearly we aren’t in this for the fame- have you ever flipped on ESPN and seen Tim the Beaver on a jersey? Tim, our not-particularly-intimidating mascot The only explanation that makes sense is that the student-athletes really, truly love what they do, and who they do it with. I know the feeling of having a longgggg day of class, and preparing for a longgggg night of studying, and then being able to drop all of that and head to practice for a few hours to play the sport I love. There’s nothing better. On top of the game itself, at some point your teammates cross a line and become family. Having moved 3,000 miles to an unfamiliar city, I can’t tell you how much this means to me. Immediately having a group of friends with shared interests, classes, and work ethics is invaluable. So maybe next time you think of MIT, the first word that comes to mind… still isn’t “athletics”. That’s fine. Just know that every day here at 5 pm, the labs and lecture halls empty, and the courts and fields and pools fill up with athletes, who for two glorious hours aren’t nerds anymore- they’re Engineers. 1. Essay about Bravely J. Silvers Forces of Labour - 2600 Words

There are several sociological theories in the study of contemporary labor unrest. However, this essay will start off to examine the rationale of capital mobility and labor transformation processes, as a coherent point of departure. To what extent is this approach significant? A simple answer is the sociological framework of Silver (2003), which is our central focus, is in contrast with the above approaches. Therefore, it’s imperative to provide an overview of what Silver was critical about. Silver conceived that the above approaches and numerous other literatures about labor unrest and globalization comprise severe methodological ramifications. Contrary to these she states that a coherent methodology should be able to situate ways in†¦show more content†¦The last section In this section, we aim to explain ways in which the conceptualization of the â€Å"race to bottom† generates different sociological interpretations. Although proponents of this thesis contradicts each other in abstractions, yet they agreed that the impact of the late twentieth century has led to what Zolberg (1995) calls an entire extinction of the social fabric, which sustains working class formation (cited in Silver, 2003:1). The most polemic explanation to this trend, however, is central to the impact of capital mobility and modifications of modern processes of a global capital accumulation; of which both ushered under the archetype of what Silver calls the â€Å"rubric of globalization† (2003). In the analysis that follows, we shall evaluate the degree to which â€Å"hypermobility of productive capital† is hyped in explicating contemporary labor unrest. To this extent, we can now turn to explore the effect of Multinational Corporations on existing labor unr est. It has been shown that multinational corporations did enhance a thriving global job market, yet it has unleashed a terminal effect to the traditional characteristics of working class. To this extent, global workers were not only forced into frantic competition, but their most influential instrument – â€Å"barging power† has been diametrically devalued (2003:4). Assess explanations of gender and ethnic inequalities in health chances Free Essays

* Using your knowledge assess explanations of gender and ethnic inequalities in HEALTH CHANCES * Write about the health chances for the different situations within society. Health Chances- Can be defined as the likelihood and possibility for an individual to become ill or unwell in view of his/hers overall health and well-being also considering the affect on an individual in view of the different situations within society. Health Chances is sometimes overlooked in view of the different situations within society. We will write a custom essay sample on Assess explanations of gender and ethnic inequalities in health chances or any similar topic only for you Order Now It can be said firmly that both gender and ethnicity unfortunately create inequalities in health chances within society. Health Chances clearly vary in these two situations and as a result have caused problems within society. Statistics in Gender inequality in health clearly show a high percentage for women in both Morbidity and Mortality Firstly, gender results to inequalities in health chances due to various factors and situations within society. Women’s position in society affects their experience of health chances. Women indeed can be said to be more open and co-operative than men in view of their general health and well-being. Women tend to visit doctors more often than men. Statistics show that women visit their G.P. 5x a year whilst men tend to visit their G.P. approximately 3x a year. Furthermore, the health of women may appear to be worse than that of men because their longer life expectancy increases the risk of chronic illnesses, senile dementia and therefore the regular use of medical services. However, statistics do indicate that women suffer more chronic disorders in all age categories. The common saying ‘women are sicker men die quicker’ is very realistic, statistics clearly show that women live longer and so are more prone to getting ill, as part of getting old. Moreover, women’s position in society affects their health chances; women have the burden of childcare, which affects them both physically and mentally. Also, domestic labour, poor employment conditions because of gender discrimination, greater exposure to poor housing as a result of poor employment, greater exposure to poverty also as a result as poor employment. Women position in society should be regarded very highly as they are situated in such conditions which lead to ‘ housewife syndromes’ acknowledged by Jessie Bernard causing ill health. It is the woman’s job in society i.e. in the family, to make decisions, bring up the children which is quite stressful along with absorbing and taking on the stress of other family members such as the children, husband which overall in my opinion is the reason to why more women get ill. Furthermore, Women in society generally tend to occupy jobs such; working in the home, the NHS social services which are generally not highly paid occupations and the fact that these jobs are a lot more stressful, and according to feminism sociologists they are unrecognised and always undervalued. Moreover, there are obviously differences in the health experiences of men and women that can be attributed to biology, particularly those concerned with reproduction. Hormonal differences can account for some variation in the occurrence of particular illnesses e.g. higher rate of heart disease amongst men before the age of 50 can partly be accounted for by the lack of protection provided by the hormone oestrogen. Genetic and biological research points to certain gender to being more prone to certain illnesses and diseases. Women suffer from certain sorts of health problems because of their distinctive biology e.g. pregnancy and childbirth, contraception and abortion, menstruation and menopause, breast and cervical cancer. They are also more likely to suffer from autoimmune disease e.g. arthritis and degenerative disease (because they live longer), but on the other hand men suffer more heart disease. Health and Ethnicity, the problem of definition; do we use race, ethnicity, or specific culture groups, e.g. Punjabi to define health and ethnicity. Ethnicity results to inequalities in health chances due to various factors and situations within society. Genetic and biological research clearly portray the fact that certain ethnic minorities are more prone to having certain diseases, e.g. Haemophilia is quite common in European men, whilst Sickle Cell Anaemia is quite common in Afro-Caribbean’s. However, we could argue that not all health illnesses are necessarily related to ethnicity, for instance, heart disease, bronchitis and strokes which all have a high incidence in the Asian community are linked to socio-economic factors not ethnicity. Moreover, diet/lifestyle/traditions and cultural values also affect the outcomes of health chances within society, i.e. Asian communities e.g. prenatal mortalities is high for Asian women but this may be because many do not attend anti-natal classes. Also, diet- high rate in the use ‘GHEE’ in the Asian cooking relating to heart disease. However, many Asian diets particularly the Vegetarian dishes are healthier than they counter parts in the white community. Furthermore, low social class, poor and under-paid occupations, unemployment and dangerous/hazardous jobs are common within the ethnic minority society, which result to poor health conditions resulting to the worst health chances. Which in effect are being persevered through generations resulting to inequality in health within the ethnic minority society. Although the materialist argument is more successful than either the genetic or cultural approaches in explaining health differences between ethnic groups it still fails to adequately explain why they should be so particularly disadvantaged. For example when comparing black and white sharing the same social class position black people are more vulnerable to unemployment. Racism in the private and public housing markets has also been shown to compound inequalities generated by social class. Racism, therefore, is further constraint on the access to conditions of life are more conductive to good health. Also racism may be a reason for a higher death/violence rate in the ethnic minority groups. However, the likelihood of contribution of racism to ill health is complex and varied. Although, high rates of unemployment, redundancy, excessive shift work, compulsion over time and un-social working hours are some issues within the ethnic minority society which contribute to the overall of affect health chances. Finally, both gender and ethnicity create inequalities in health chances within society, as discussed. Some of which can be regarded as acceptable i.e. unavoidable, whilst others can be clearly acknowledged as discriminating, etc. How to cite Assess explanations of gender and ethnic inequalities in health chances, Essays

Summary Essays - Soups, Chicken Soup, Traditional Medicine, Soto

Summary Objective Summary: The story is about a child's expectance of a family life filled with love and comforts, which is contrast with his real working class family life. Subjective Evaluation: Soto, back to his age of nine, dreamed to live in a family life that was uncomplicated in its routine. In reality, Soto lived in a working class family; he tried to change his family to imitate the perfect families he absorbed from television. I think many people have done what Soto did to fulfill the dream of a perfect family they wanted. I am not excluded from this either. I have an experience of attempting to change my family life. It was one year later after my family first came to the US in 1995. I learned many new things in this country that I never knew in China, and I appreciated some living styles in American culture. As I tended to like the styles of American life, I expected my family like them, too. The thing I wanted my family to change was the cooking style. I hated to cook Chinese dinner because it took so long to prepare. There are four kinds of food which are considered essential parts of Chinese dinner: rice, soup, vegetable, and meat; they are usually cooked separately. I was not the one who was good at cooking in my family, but I did have to cook when I came home earlier than my parents and two sisters still at work. One day, when we were sitting together at the dinning table for dinner, I suggested to my family that we could have sandwiches and precooked food from the supermarket as our dinner since many American families do. My parents looked at me in bewilderment. Son, you must be kidding, right? Those sandwiches and precooked food do not give you enough nutrition for growing up, my dad said. And precooked food is not good for your health, my mother kept on. My elder sisters showed no interest in my idea. I grew frustrated from their reaction, but I did not give up. Evening after evening, I kept bringing up the idea at the dinning table. My mother finally permitted me to make one American dinner for the family. That day, I went to the supermarket to buy bread, ham, and chicken soup right after school. I planned on making ham sandwiches and chicken soup for the dinner. The dinner was ready and served at our usual dinnertime. My mother tasted a spoon of the chicken soup and said, It tastes like brine, nothing but salty. Why don't they put some shark fins in it? She refused to have another spoon. My sisters only had a small bite of their sandwiches and then put them down; my father barely finished one. Even I could not have another one after finishing two. That night, my parents and sisters had instant noodle for dinner. Such a result was out of my expectation, but I had to accept it. From then on, the subject of changing cooking style is never brought up to the family conversation. I think Soto had the same feeling as I did when he found out that there was no way to change his family to be the perfect family he expected. When he realized that, he went out to look for work; being different from him, I tried to bring up another subject to the family conversation.

In 1994, Reagan announced that he had Alzheimers Disease and left public life. He died of pneumonia on June 5, 2004. His massive buildup of weapons which the USSR could not match and his friendship with Premier Gorbachev helped usher in a new era of openness which eventually caused the breakup of the USSR into individual states. His presidency was marred by the events of the Iran-Contra Scandal. Events and Accomplishments of Ronald Reagan’s Presidency: Soon after Reagan took office, an assassination attempt was made on his life. On March 30, 1981, John Hinckley, Jr. shot six rounds at Reagan. He was hit by one of the bullets which caused a collapsed lung. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a mental institution. Reagan adopted an economic policy whereby tax cuts were created to help increase savings, spending, and investment. Inflation went down and after a time so did unemployment. However, a huge budget deficit was created. A lot of terrorist acts occurred during Reagans time in office. For example, in April 1983 an explosion occurred at the U.S. embassy in Beirut. Reagan claimed that five countries typically harbored aided terrorists: Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, and Nicaragua. Further, Muammar Qaddafi was singled out as the primary terrorist. One of the major issues of Reagans second administration was the Iran-Contra Scandal. This involved several individuals throughout the administration. In exchange for selling arms to Iran, money would be given to the revolutionary Contras in Nicaragua. The hope was also that by selling arms to Iran, terrorist organizations would be willing to give up hostages. However, Reagan had spoken out that America would never negotiate with terrorists. The revelations of the Iran-Contra scandal caused one of the major scandals of the 1980s.In 1983, the U.S. invaded Grenada to rescue threatened Americans. They were rescued and the leftists were overthrown. One of the most important events that occurred during Reagans administration was the growing relationship between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Reagan created a bond with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev who instituted a new spirit of openness or glasnost. This would eventually lead to the downfall of the Soviet Union during President George H. W. Bushs term in office.

What is the future of recruiting as a profession

What is the future of recruiting as a profession Attention recruiters- are you feeling a bit of existential despair when it comes to your profession? If so, you’re not alone. Most of us go through inflection periods at various points in our careers and begin to wonder if we’re stuck in a dead-end profession, merely punching a clock and wasting time that would be better spent doing something- anything- else. These moments of professional introspection can be scary but they can also be really beneficial- they can help you take stock of your current levels of career happiness and fulfillment, and possibly plan for a change if needed. Or, they can help you think through a potentially incomplete way of thinking and make you reappreciate your current field or position. Both of these can be positive and beneficial steps, despite the fact that they can feel overwhelming or scary in the moment. If you’re a recruiter and are starting to feel as if you’re in a dead end job, first acknowledge that it’s a questi on many of us ask about our careers these days, as technology and innovation rapidly change and reshape the ways in which we think, work, and live our lives in fundamental ways. In addition, the more time we spend doing a specific set of tasks, the more likely it is that fatigue will set in- which is perfectly normal. This fatigue might make it temporarily feel as if you’re in a dead-end job, or it might be an indication that you’re ready to consider the possibility of a career change. Before you make up your mind about whether or not being a recruiter is truly a â€Å"road to nowhere,† let’s dig a little deeper. How the role of recruiters is changing- and what it meansPerhaps you’ve reached the conclusion that being a recruiter is a dead-end job because of all the ways in which new technological advances, such as the rise of Artificial Intelligence,   are changing the industry, and are starting to wonder if it’s only a matter of time befor e human recruiters are no longer even needed. The following key aspects of the human recruitment process can indeed be replaced by automation including:Resume screening: Software is being utilized (and becoming more sophisticated) that can capably â€Å"learn† the requirements and skills needed for a particular job and identify qualified candidates accordingly.
